Drug Trafficking On Campus
Translations available in: English (original) | French | Spanish | Italian | German | Portuguese | Swedish | Russian | Dutch | Arabic

I was disturbed to hear that at the University of Connecticut-Storrs there was an actual heroin or cocaine ring. I can't validate this my self, but the use of illicit drugs on campus is definitely pervasive. It has become such a normality. I don't condemn doing drugs because of any specific principle of mine per say, but I really think that there's a strong link between consumerism throughout the world and violence in countries such as Mexico. I did an online e-mail interview last year with Carlos Monsivais (the contents of which I will post shortly), a prolific Mexican social critic, and I found it disconcerting that he seems to think that journalists are losing their lives because of their critical stance against drug traffickers, and that it's sort of in vain. This troubled me a lot, and I really want to figure out the most peaceful and unassuming way to combat drug trafficking. Of course getting rid of demand will help a lot, but will drug traffickers give up this multi-billion dollar industry without a fight? How can the supply side be effectively dealt with? Moreover, poverty seems to be another huge factor in the drug trade. Drug mules take drugs in capsules and risk their lives to transport drugs across continents. This is done out of desperation, and I imagine that a big part of the problem is poverty. What to do, my friend?
